Sick Shot: Austin Rivers Hits Game-Winning Buzzer Beater To Lift Duke Over North Carolina
There have been some incredible game-winning buckets throughout the Duke-UNC rivalry, but I would venture to say that Austin River’s buzzer beater last night to give the Blue Devils the win was arguably the most incredible.
Don’t get me wrong, Jeff Capel’s damn-near half-courter in 1995 was pretty ridiculous as well, but given that Duke was, well, Dookie that year (Coach K dipped with mental back problems) and the game was at Cameron, that shot wasn’t as important as the one that Rivers hit last night.
Just a freshman, Rivers had the game in his hands on the home floor of his team’s biggest rival and managed to shake his defender with a step-back to get a sweet jumper over the outstretched arms of a 7-footer that hit nothing but net.
It’s a safe bet that Rivers’ career with Duke will be limited to this season, but he has joined the lore of dudes like Christian Laettner and Capel, showing that his heart does not pump Kool-aid like a standard Duke square-bear.
